  • IRB Sindhudurg Airport, A Greenfield Airport developed under the PPP Model

The more the Airport infrastructure available for the region, the more the opportunities available for growth of regional economy; especially in attracting the Tourism from all over the World. In view of this, the Govt. of Maharashtra decided to promote Konkan in general and Sindhudurg in particular as the most sought after tourist destination.

To attract foreign investment and tourism, need to get quality tourist in large number from all over the world is must; and the same can’t be achieved without the destination has its own airport. Therefore, not only was Sindhudurg District declared as the first Tourist District of India, but the State Govt. had decided to build an Airport in Sindhudurg itself by encouraging private investment.

Govt. Maharashtra approved the project at Chipi Wadi, Parule village, Vengurle Taluka in Sindhudurg district and appointed the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation to function as a Nodal Agency to facilitate and supervise development of proposed Sindhudurg Airport.

Through a competitive bidding process, IRB Infrastructure Developers Limited was entrusted to develop the project as a Concessionaire on Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer basis.

Taking up the task, IRB formed the 100% owned Special Purpose Vehicle Subsidiary, IRB Sindhudurg Airport Pvt. Ltd., and commenced activity to bring the dream into a reality by roping in the leading experts in the sector, like Larsen & Toubro Ltd, as the contractor, Indian Oil Corporation, as the aviation fuel supplier, STUP Consultants Pvt Ltd., Feedback Infrastructure Services Pvt Ltd., Air Transport & Tourism Advisors, Ultratech, Honeywell Automation India Ltd., etc.

After getting all required clearances from the various authorities, the Company started the project development work and today it is almost ready to commence operations soon.

On commissioning, Sindhudurg Airport will be the first of its kind in the South Konkan Region, which will establish and enhance air connectivity of the region with Western Maharashtra; Southern States; Mumbai and subsequently to all regions of the Nation.

The airport, being the strategically important facility, has also potentials and provisions to handle critical situations like emergency landings as well as be ready and equipped as Standby facility for nearby airports during exigencies. Along with the robust safety and security arrangements, the airport has dedicated isolation bay for handling emergency.

Entire Western Ghats, Konkan Region is Sindhudurg District is blessed with rich natural beauty; flowing rivers; beautiful sea shores; rich culture and heritage; tourist attractions and places of pilgrimages and much more than that. It has historical attractions like Sindhudurg Fort, Vijaydurg Fort; adventurous water sports locations at Tarkarli; rich culture and heritage as well as pilgrimage places across the entire district and much more.

Once commissioned, the Airport will not only generate the passenger traffic, but also it will be a boon for economic development of the region as it will facilitate and boost cargo transportation; generate direct as well as an indirect employment and other business opportunities for the local people.
